SWINDON ARTSWORDS READING GROUP

Dear Reader                                                                                                              August 2014

The 138th monthly meeting of the Swindon Artswords Reading Group took place on the evening of 15th July. - We talked about May We Be Forgiven by A M Homes. Things like this were said.  ‘Good cinematic style of writing.’ – ‘Great dialogue.’- ‘Was both repelled and fascinated by the story.’ – ‘Graceless; negative; unimaginative; and highly improbable.’ – We then made time to consider titles for the second half of 2014.  Here, determined by suggestion, suitability, and availability in paperback, are the four final choices for the rest of the year.

7.30pm Tuesday 16th September – Breath by Tim Winton.  Why is there a human need for excitement and a wish to push to limits? What is the attraction of the sea; did you surf this summer; and why does everyone live with an element of tragedy?

7.30pm Tuesday 14th OctoberThe Blue Flower by Penelope Fitzgerald.  A passionate, idealistic, and brilliant young man, who was to become the great romantic poet and philosopher Novalis, astounds and disturbs family and friends by his wished-for betrothal. What can he be thinking?

7.30pm Tuesday 4th November Mrs Dalloway by Virginia Woolf.   Clarissa prepares for a party at which she is to be hostess. As the story travels forwards and back in time and in and out of characters' minds, an image is constructed of Clarissa's life and of inter-war social structure.

7.30pm Tuesday 9th December – No One Writes to the Colonel by Gabriel Garcia Marquez. Cock-fighting, corruption, poverty, and insignificance, in Colombia, with a little censorship and government control thrown in. Life in provincial Latin America?

All meetings are held at Lower Shaw Farm, Old Shaw Lane, Shaw, West Swindon, SN5 5PJ. Start time is 7.30pm. -  The cost is £2 per session. Note. Swindon’s brilliant independent bookshop, Pen & Paper in Old Town, tel. 01793 421641, can readily supply all these titles. For most of them, advance notice is required. Of course, other sources, bookshops, and book suppliers are available.

If there is anything else you need to know, please do not hesitate to get in touch.

Enjoy the rest of summer and happy reading!
